Cleans Your Gear
Your waterproof clothing and equipment could be soaking up water because the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) has been compromised by dirt, or because it has been cleaned with a conventional laundry detergent. Dirt attracts water and household detergents leave water attracting (hydrophilic) residues, leading to fabric 'wetting out' in wet or damp conditions.
If your waterproof clothing or equipment is relatively new, or recently treated with a Nikwax waterproofer, then using a Nikwax cleaner will not only remove contaminants, such as dirt and residues left behind by household detergents, but also revitalize DWR.
Waterproofs Your Gear
Your garment could be soaking up water just because it is dirty. Once the garment has been cleaned, you will need to repair the DWR, using Nikwax waterproofing products.
Alternative waterproofing products are often solvent-based aerosols or use fluorocarbons. Aerosol products are flammable, and fluorocarbons pose a potential risk to the environment and to the long-term health of the consumer.
Nikwax is WaterBased, non-flammable, contains no harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and is fluorocarbon free.
Aids the Breathability of Your Gear
When we work hard, we sweat. The evaporation of sweat cools us down and keeps us comfortable. But, when it rains we want to avoid getting wet, so we put on waterproof outerwear to keep us dry. The waterproof fabric must allow moisture vapor to pass through it, or 'breathe'; otherwise our sweat cannot evaporate, causing us to overheat and get wet from condensation.
If the outer fabric absorbs water, the garment can lose up to 70% of its breathability. Therefore, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) on the outer fabric of your jacket must be maintained to ensure comfort. It will eventually wear off and need to be renewed with Nikwax products.

Nikwax does it again!
Dried as recommended in the dryer with dryer balls... tennis balls will also work I am sure. They help fluff up the down as it dries. I did stop the dryer every so often to break up clumped feathers on the inside... dry more & repeat... many times.
So worth the extra time spent. Fluffy and like new. Do make sure your coat is "water proof" / "water resistant", from what I understand the down has been chemically treated differently and you may not get the fluff back if you if it does not have this rating. I looked up the current model of the same North Face jacket to be sure it fit that criteria before I purchased this solution.
